NIOS mainly caters to the educational needs of children who fail to cope with the regular school curriculum. The system is more sensitive to the occupational and functional needs of learners, so the NIOS curriculum is spread across both academic and vocational areas.
NIOS follows a learner centric approach of teaching through Open and Distance mode. It attempts to reach out to physically, mentally, socially, geographically and disadvantaged groups through suitable learning and delivery mechanism.
It offers a wide range of subjects in comparison to any other formal schools. The learners are free to choose subject combinations as per their needs and goals. The learners study at their own pace from specially designed self-instructional materials and have the freedom to appear in examinations as per their preparation. There is a provision of credit accumulation. The registration of the learners is valid for a period of 5 years.
The Secondary/ Sr. Secondary certificate obtained from NIOS has the same recognition as certificates issued by other boards. NIOS offers its courses mainly in English, Hindi and Urdu medium. At the secondary level, besides these mediums, Telugu, Gujarati, Malayalam and Marathi are also available. NIOS learners do appear and compete in various competitive examinations, however the eligibility criteria must be fulfilled.
